![]() Isn’t it interesting that McCree just happens to be on this train that gets attacked by Talon, and the Talon grunts involved are using methods from the Blackwatch playbook?ĭoomfist’s capture happened within months of the destruction of Overwatch HQ. Money can’t buy subordinates this helpful. Just go with them! Make sure you steer them into Talon, and they’ll carry you among their number straight to where you need to be. Oh, a bunch of people in your organization want to defect and become power-hungry thugs? No problem. Sought to bring down the organization and turn it to their own ends. Talon is a world of mercenaries, so once Reaper proves himself it’s an easy in.īut as Overwatch’s influence waned, rogue elements within Blackwatch The key here is that Reaper is also classified as a mercenary, at least according to his Hero Profile. Īfter the fall of Overwatch or perhaps even beforehand, Reyes begins moonlighting as “Reaper”, an apparently battle-mad terrorist. He has fought in many armed conflicts in the last decades, showing no Remorseless killer responsible for terrorist attacks across the world. The Reaper is an extremely volatile mercenary, a ruthless and I’ll talk more about this in a bit, but it is possible that working with Moira has some side effects. Reaper also appears to be continuing his genetic therapy with Moira-based on his interaction with Sombra on the Oasis map and some of the genetics papers found around there-so it’s a very happy arrangement for the two of them. Reyes notices his personal geneticist Moira passing off information to Talon, and rather than stopping her he decides to get involved, using her connection as his own. SOMBRA (on Oasis): What are we doing here, boss? Įlite operators within the Talon organization appear to possess genetic and cybernetic augmentation that make them extremely dangerous in combat, particularly in close quarters.īelieved to be the product of extensive genetic engineering, employ an extremely powerful exoskeleton and stimulants Utilizing the results for their own purposes. Yet some have whispered that the shadowy Talon organization had alreadyīeen supporting her for years, aiding her experiments in exchange for Here are a few ways Reyes may have joined Talon (combine as desired): There’s a few scenarios that come to mind, all based around a central premise: Reyes intended to join Talon as a Blackwatch infiltrator and bring the organization down from the inside. The allusion then is that this is some kind of insider slang used by associates of Reaper that his language choices tend to rub off on the people closest to him. When McCree uses it in front of Echo she’s confused by it, even though we learned from Zero Hour that she knows Winston. Yesterday on Twitter, made a post about the significance of McCree calling Winston “monkey” in the Reunion short, noting that only Reaper and Sombra also use that language to describe Winston, Reaper in the Recall short and Sombra in an interaction with Doomfist. I don’t think it’s hard to see where, both professionally and personally, Reaper might have some issues with Talon. Previous assassination attempts had all failed, but in the case of the Retribution comic there was widespread additional damage- all to Blackwatch agents. Of course we know that eventually Talon caught up with Gérard and dealt with him in one of the most hideous ways possible: kidnapping his wife and brainwashing her, then delivering her back to him and having her murder him in his sleep. ![]() In addition to being Reaper’s “villain origin story”, Retribution introduced us to the fact that Reyes was a good friend to Gérard Lacroix, an agent who at one time saved his life. …at one point Reyes was in charge of Overwatch when it formed, and when it became more of a thing after they defeated the Omnic Crisis, Morrison was actually given the top position of power and Reyes was overlooked because he was too rogue, he was too maverick in his leadership style-he ruffled too many feathers. I now think it has to do with how far Gabriel Reyes is willing to go to defeat Talon. To me it never quite made sense- Blackwatch was made for dirty work, so why the focus on this particular incident? Why is this the genesis of Reaper? Regardless of how you feel about Reyes’s actions toward Antonio, it seems like quite a leap to go from “Reyes abuses his command to murder a Talon gangster” to “Reyes is Reaper, a homicidal Talon terrorist”. So last week I was thinking about a Blizzcon 2018 panel where Cate Gary (Senior Editor/Franchise Development) discussed the Retribution comic, describing it as a “villain origin story”.
